A person to emulate

Today is a special day. A day for introspection for all engineers. Today nation celebrates 150th birth day of successful, multifaceted engineer and statesman who was a true visionary, Sir M. Visvesvaraya a man beyond descriptions ,hailing from Chikballapur District of karnataka. I dont want to enlist what he had done in his lifetime here, rather i need to discuss some points that as an engineer we often overlook.( those who want to know about him go this way) Through his life he showed as what a noble profession is engineering and what is expected out of engineers. He was a man of ethics, i doubt how many of us even know him. He showed the social commitment demanded by this profession and exemplified the role of engineers in development of a society. Today many of us are forced onto engineering profession and end up in failures and  those who succeed often falls in the rat race of money and completely hesitate to practice what they learned and often lured by the hefty packages provided by software MNC's. I know many students hesitate to continue in their own branches and often shift their job to software industry. Well i think its high time we should put in place some system in which we can be sure of those who are coming into engineering are really interested one. Current education system is to be blamed which measure up students in terms of marks and grade, and currently i wont find any engineering college is giving care about developing engineering skills or teaches about engineering job ethics. Students are often bound in boundaries set by their text books. They don't have time to think about broad social commitment or social revolution they are capable of doing. They just want to finish their course and escape. Often govt jobs are eclipsed by corruption and several malpractices but Sir M.V started his career in PWD and was hugely successful there. He was disproving many dogmas and always craved for modernity and innovation. He truly believed that engineers are nation builders, and they carry the key role in development of our country. There is another guy who also championed  a silent revolution , a revolution in low cost housing. Mr Laurie baker but again he also went with out much appreciation and attention. These people dedicate their life for a cause and believed in their profession and had a strong belief their profession has got a social commitment and their profession can change the world.
